The Hidden Dangers of Waterborne Debris After Flooding: What You Need to Know

10/16/2024 (Permalink)

SERVPRO working on remediation We explore the types of waterborne debris, the risks they pose, and how you can protect your property after a flood.

Flooding can leave a devastating impact on communities, not only through immediate water damage but also by introducing dangerous waterborne debris. This debris can pose significant risks to both property and the environment, making it essential to understand the dangers and how to address them effectively. In this blog, we’ll explore the types of waterborne debris, the risks they pose, and how you can protect your property after a flood.

Understanding Waterborne Debris

When floodwaters rise, they often carry with them a variety of debris. This debris can include anything from tree branches and vegetation to man-made objects like furniture, vehicles, and even hazardous materials. The force of the water can transport these items over long distances, causing widespread destruction and making cleanup efforts more challenging.

In fact, according to a study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), waterborne debris can account for up to 85 percent of the total debris generated by a flood event, depending on the severity of the flooding and the region impacted. This staggering statistic underscores the importance of addressing waterborne debris in any post-flood recovery plan!

The Risks Posed by Waterborne Debris

Waterborne debris poses several risks, primarily to structures, infrastructure, and the environment. Understanding these risks can help homeowners and businesses take appropriate actions to mitigate damage.

Structural Damage

One of the most immediate concerns with waterborne debris is the potential for structural damage. Large objects like trees, cars, and construction materials can collide with buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure, leading to severe damage or even collapse. The force of the water can exacerbate the impact, making it difficult to predict or prevent damage.

Blocked Drainage Systems

Waterborne debris can also clog drainage systems, culverts, and stormwater management facilities. When these systems are obstructed, water cannot drain properly, leading to prolonged flooding and increased water damage. This blockage can also result in additional costs and delays during the cleanup and restoration process.

Environmental Impact

Flooding can carry debris into natural waterways, where it can harm aquatic ecosystems. The introduction of foreign materials, particularly hazardous substances like chemicals and oil, can contaminate water sources and harm wildlife. Furthermore, debris can alter the flow of rivers and streams, leading to erosion and changes in the landscape that can take years to recover from.

How to Address Waterborne Debris After a Flood

Effective cleanup and restoration are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with waterborne debris. Here are a few steps to consider:

  • Hire Professional Restoration Services: Companies like SERVPRO® specialize in flood cleanup and restoration, including the removal of waterborne debris. They have the expertise and equipment to safely and efficiently handle debris, minimizing further damage to your property.
  • Inspect and Clear Drainage Systems: Ensure that all drainage systems are inspected and cleared of debris to prevent further flooding. This may require professional assistance, particularly if the debris includes hazardous materials.
  • Plan for Future Flooding: Consider flood-proofing measures for your property, such as elevating structures, installing flood barriers, and creating a debris management plan to reduce the impact of future floods.

Conclusion

Waterborne debris is a significant and often overlooked risk after flooding. From structural damage to environmental harm, the dangers posed by this debris require immediate and professional attention. By understanding the risks and taking proactive steps to address them, you can protect your property and contribute to the broader recovery effort. For expert assistance in flood cleanup and debris removal, SERVPRO is Here to Help®.

Flooding can happen unexpectedly, but with the right knowledge and resources, you can navigate the aftermath safely and effectively.

Essential Equipment for Water Damage Restoration

4/25/2024 (Permalink)

Employee loading equipment into a SERVPRO van. By utilizing a combination of advanced equipment and proven restoration techniques, we can effectively mitigate water damage.

Water damage can cause structural damage, mold growth, and other hazards if not addressed promptly. To effectively mitigate water damage and restore your home or business to its preloss condition, professional restoration companies rely on a variety of equipment and tools. Let's explore the essential equipment used in water damage restoration and why each tool is crucial for effective restoration efforts.

Extractors

Extractors are powerful machines designed to remove standing water from affected areas quickly and efficiently. These machines come in various sizes and types, including portable extractors for smaller areas and truck-mounted extractors for larger water damage incidents. Extractors utilize suction power to extract water from carpets, flooring, and other surfaces, facilitating faster drying and preventing further damage.

Dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers play a crucial role in the water damage restoration process by removing excess moisture from the air and materials in the affected space. High humidity levels can prolong the drying process and promote mold growth, making dehumidification essential for preventing secondary damage. Commercial-grade dehumidifiers are capable of extracting large volumes of moisture from the air, expediting the drying process, and restoring optimal indoor humidity levels.

Air Movers

Air movers, also known as fans or blowers, are used to enhance air circulation and promote evaporation during the drying process. By directing airflow across wet surfaces, air movers accelerate moisture evaporation, allowing water to transition from a liquid to a vapor state. This helps expedite the drying process and prevents moisture from lingering in building materials, reducing the risk of mold growth and structural damage.

Moisture Meters

Moisture meters are essential diagnostic tools used to assess the moisture content of building materials and monitor the progress of the drying process. These handheld devices measure the moisture levels within various materials, such as drywall, wood, and concrete, allowing restoration professionals to determine the extent of water damage and verify when materials have been adequately dried. Accurate moisture readings enable targeted drying strategies and ensure thorough moisture removal.

Thermal Imaging Cameras

Thermal imaging cameras are valuable tools used to detect hidden moisture and water intrusion within building structures. These cameras utilize infrared technology to capture thermal images of surfaces, revealing temperature variations that may indicate the presence of moisture. By identifying hidden moisture pockets behind walls, ceilings, and floors, thermal imaging cameras help restoration professionals pinpoint areas requiring targeted drying and prevent potential mold growth and structural damage.

Injectidry Systems

Injectidry systems are specialized drying systems designed to address water intrusion in hard-to-reach areas, such as wall cavities, ceiling voids, and underneath flooring. These systems use a network of hoses and injectors to deliver warm, dry air into confined spaces, effectively drying moisture trapped within building materials. Injectidry systems allow restoration technicians to target specific areas with precision, ensuring thorough drying and preventing secondary damage.

By utilizing a combination of advanced equipment and proven restoration techniques, professional restoration companies like SERVPRO of Shrewsbury/Westborough can effectively mitigate water damage and restore properties to preloss condition quickly and efficiently. Frozen Pipes and Water Damage: Everything You Need to Know

2/14/2024 (Permalink)

Standing water in a basement. Don’t hesitate to give our SERVPRO of Shrewsbury/Westborough a call today!

As temperatures drop during the winter months, the risk of frozen pipes in homes significantly increases. While frozen pipes might seem like a mere inconvenience, they can lead to severe water damage if not addressed promptly. Understanding the causes, signs, prevention, and necessary steps to take in the event of frozen pipes is crucial to safeguarding your home.

Causes of Frozen Pipes

Pipes tend to freeze when exposed to extremely low temperatures, especially in unheated or poorly insulated areas of the house such as attics, basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls.

When temperatures plummet below freezing, the water inside pipes can freeze and expand, causing pressure to build up and potentially lead to pipe bursts. Poorly insulated pipes are more susceptible to freezing. Lack of insulation in vulnerable areas leaves pipes exposed to harsh outdoor temperatures. Another common cause includes gaps or cracks in walls, foundations, or around pipes' entry points that can expose them to cold air. This increases the likelihood of freezing.

Signs of Frozen Pipes

Identifying frozen pipes early can prevent potential water damage. Look out for these signs:

  • Frost on Visible Pipes: Visible pipes in unheated areas might have frost on their exterior, indicating freezing.
  • No Water Flow: If faucets produce little to no water or only a trickle, it could indicate frozen pipes.
  • Unusual Odors: An odd smell could be due to a blockage in the pipes caused by freezing.

Prevention Tips

Taking preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

  • Properly insulate pipes in vulnerable areas using pipe sleeves, heat tape, or foam insulation.
  • Keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature, even during cold nights. Allow warm air to circulate pipes by opening cabinet doors.
  • Allowing faucets to drip can relieve pressure buildup in the pipes and prevent freezing.
  • Seal gaps or cracks in walls, windows, and foundations to prevent cold air from reaching pipes.

Dealing with Frozen Pipes

If you suspect frozen pipes, take immediate action:

  1. Keep Faucets Open
  2. Apply Heat
  3. Call a Professional

In conclusion, preventing frozen pipes through insulation, adequate heating, and vigilance is key to avoiding potential water damage in your home during winter. Being proactive and knowing how to identify and address frozen pipes can save you from costly repairs and the hassle of dealing with water damage emergencies. Remember, in severe situations, seeking professional assistance is always advisable to ensure your home is protected. Don’t hesitate to give our SERVPRO of Shrewsbury/Westborough a call today!

In this, our first installment of “Ask a SERVPRO Pro we speak with SERVPRO of Shrewsbury/Westborough’s Manager of Business Development, Sean O’Neill. Sean is a seasoned cleanup and restoration professional, holding IICRC certifications in Applied Microbial Remediation and Water Damage Restoration.

We asked Sean, “How can we prepare for the spring thaw?” This is what he had to say:

It’ s been a long, cold winter. We are all looking forward to Spring, but  with it comes its own set of challenges. With rising temperatures, melting snow, the potential for spring storms & flooding the possibility for water damage climbs. The best way to prevent water damage is to be prepared.

Spring is known for its unpredictable weather. The thawing of snow and ice in spring can lead to water damage. Follow these tips to protect your home  or business:

  • Ensure drains take water away from your property and that they are not obstructed with debris.
  • Be sure to remove snow from around your property. This helps to prevent melting snow from draining into the building.
  • Consider having your roof inspected - make sure it hasn’t sustained winter damage and is ready for spring storms.
  • Check and maintain your gutters and downspouts. Backed up gutters and downspouts can overflow lead to water damage- make sure they are clear of debris and that water flows freely.
  • Check grading around home to ensure water is directed away.
  • Check your foundation for cracks. If you do find cracks, we would advise having them, assessed and repaired by professional specializing in foundation repairs and waterproofing.
  • Check that your sump pump is working. If your area is prone to floods, this can be your first line of defense against water damage caused by basement flooding.
  • Review your insurance. Not all home owner’s insurance covers flood damage, familiarize yourself with your coverage. Know that if more is needed, it can take up to 30 days to take effect.

HOW CRITICAL ARE THE FIRST 24 HOURS?

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

Fire or water losses, even smaller incidents, can result in costly claims over time. The longer smoke, soot, or moisture have to permeate contents and structural components, the more secondary damage one can expect to encounter.

SERVPRO® professionals have been performing fire and water cleanup and restoration services for nearly 50 years. Experience has shown that fast, appropriate action delivered within the first 24 hours can dramatically reduce secondary damage. Smoke and soot have less time to chemically interact and damage or destroy contents, and moisture is prevented from spreading and breaking down structural components or promoting the growth of mold and mildew.

Offering 24-hour emergency services, SERVPRO® professionals are committed to responding to fire and water claims during the most critical time period following a loss. Usually onsite in less than four hours, SERVPRO® arrives prepared to begin emergency mitigation services to help prevent secondary damage to the structure and contents.

SERVPRO® utilizes specific industry technology designed for the collection and reporting of claims information for the insurance industry. SERVPRO® professionals can quickly gather the necessary information an adjuster will need to authorize the cleanup and restoration process. The end result is a better, more informed decision-making process, which can speed up the cleanup and restoration of the policyholder's property.

The objective of critical response is to help return homeowners and business owners' properties back to its preloss condition while also controlling claims costs. Your local SERVPRO® franchise can provide the emergency service, mitigation, cleanup and restoration experience and industry-specific technology to help you accomplish these goals. When a policyholder experiences a fire or water loss, even those that fall under the deductible limit or are excluded under their policy, reach out to your local SERVPRO® team to help protect their property and contents now and in the future.

Five Basic Tips for Preventing Water Damage in Your Home

8/21/2020 (Permalink)

The best way to deal with water damage is to prevent it from happening at all. Follow these Five Basic Water Damage Prevention Tips to help  keep your home safe, maintained and free from water damage.

  1. Keep a Watchful Eye on Your Water Bill

Your water bill can tell you a lot about what’s going on in unseen areas of your home.  If your usage jumps significantly from one month to the next without explanation it could mean trouble.  Is there a leak in your Perhaps a crack in a pipe in your front yard, a link in your crawl space or crawlspace? Or, is it a pipe in your front yard? Don’t leave mystery leaks unattended!

  1. Get to Know Your Water Main

Make sure to know the location of your water main and shut it off if you leave for an extended amount of time.  If water can’t get in, chances are faucet drips and burst pipes can’t wreak havoc on your home when you’re away.

  1. Perform Regular Maintenance Checks on Appliances

Examine and maintain your appliances regularly for leaks according to manufacturer’s directions.

  1. Replace Worn Washing Machine Hoses

Old, brittle or leaky washing machine hoses are a common cause of water damage and loss for homeowners.  Make sure to replace yours regularly to help to avoid expensive damage.

  1. Act Quickly -Investigate Leaks Right Away & Fix Promptly

Ignoring moisture damage, postponing necessary repairs, can lead to mold, mildew, dry rot, or even structural damage.  It’s also worth noting that while   homeowner’s insurance may provide coverage for sudden or accidental damage, damage resulting from neglect or lack of maintenance is not often covered in a standard policy.

When Water Damage does happen the professionals at  SERVPRO® of Shrewsbury/Westborough have the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Being prepared and practicing regular maintenance is always your strongest defense against water damage but when the unexpected or unpreventable does happen we’re here to help®.

Tech and Customer in kitchen testing for water damage SERVPRO® of Shrewsbury/Westborough has the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.” Call Us Today (508) 393-7898

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO® of Shrewsbury/Westborough professionals have the equipment, training, and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss.

When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. Your SERVPRO® of Shrewsbury/Westborough franchise professionals will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO® franchise professionals.

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® franchise professionals to monitor the drying process.

Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® franchise professionals can calculate and create an environment most

conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.

Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.

Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.

The bottom line? Your SERVPRO® of Shrewsbury/Westborough professionals have the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage has Different Classes, What Class are You?

Water damage is categorized as one of three levels by how polluted the water source was that caused the damage.

Category 1: Water from a clean water source, like a fresh water line for a dishwasher. This water will not cause illness or any Water damage is categorized as one of three levels by how polluted the water source was that caused the ill effects.

Category 2: Water that may cause illness through contact. It may have bacteria in it,

Category 3: Water that is highly contaminated. Contact can cause severe illness or death. Think sewage backup, an overflowing toilet, or storm waters.

Even though water may start out as Category 1, that doesn’t mean it will stay that way. Any contamination that the water touches, such as dirty carpeting or soil from the ground, can change water damage Category 2 or even Category 3. Temperature - If a room is too cool, it slows the evaporation process. Technicians will use a series of space heaters to raise the temperature to point somewhere between 70 and 80 percent. If we raise it higher than that on the first day, the hotter air can actually retain more moisture and work against our efforts.

Amount of Water to be Evaporated - Simply put the more water trapped in floors and walls adds to the moisture in the air, and our technicians try to extract every drop possible. In addition to the heaters for raising the temperature, technicians will place dehumidifiers at key positions to draw moisture from the air. Each machine can draw up to 30 gallons per day.

Humidity - Relative Humidity (RH) is the percentage of moisture in the air. Most people are comfortable with a range of 30 to 50 percent. Levels over 60 percent in your home slow the drying process and provide an atmosphere where inactive mold spores can begin to expand and grow. We can bring this level down to around 30 percent after 24 hours with the use of the dehumidifiers and heaters.

Air Movement - By moving or circulating the air in a high moisture area, the heaters and dehumidifiers work more efficiently. Technicians set up a series of air moving machines to blow damp air out and replace it with warmer dry air. These machines are also very useful to evenly dry the surfaces of tables and other furniture.

Water Removal in a Grafton Property - An Ounce of Prevention

Enjoy Your Home, Call SERVPRO for Help with Water Extraction

Storm and other water damage can happen to every home. Showers and snow are expected next week in our community, so now is the time to look at what we can do to protect our homes before rain and snow find a way in where they do not belong.

Preventing the need for water removal in your Grafton home is the best way to deal with it. SERVPRO has extensive experience in both prevention and clean-up. In fact, there are two things that you as a homeowner can do before you have to call us to keep your home ready for the increasingly inclement weather. They are simple and not expensive to accomplish. These suggestions may even keep you from having to call at all.

First, clean and maintain your drains and gutters. Our inspectors find in many cases that the initial leak into a home comes from poorly cared for drains and gutters that have not been cleaned for months or even years. Water that can't drain correctly collects on roof tops, damages tiles, fascia’s, and eventually finds its way underneath to damage attics and walls. Ice dams can also be prevented with structurally sound roof drainage.

Second, reinforce your roofs. Winter storms are very good at finding that one spot where the roofing is weakened and not properly secured to the roof supports. If it does not compromise the strength and functionality of the roof, it is always a good idea to use additional nails and screws to secure the sheathing and shingles further. It is never a good idea to start off the New Year trying to nail down plastic sheeting over a hole.

If the weather does overcome preparation, you can rely on our teams of SERVPRO technicians to remove the water and restore your water damaged property back to normal. Each of our franchises maintains an extensive inventory of pumps and extractors to quickly remove standing water as well as heaters and air movers to remove excess moisture.

If a snowstorm has knocked out power, we can also deploy generators and generator trucks to ensure uninterrupted electrical service and get you back into your home as soon as we can.

Our community may be a little smaller than many in Massachusetts, but we are certainly in one of the most beautiful areas in the state. There's no need to let fall and winter weather cause you not to enjoy every moment. If you require our services, SERVPRO of Shrewsbury / Westborough is ready to help. Call us today at (508) 757-7885.
